Are you Spraying and Praying? Try This

In a job market like this one, the number one phrase I hear clients saying when I ask them what type of roles they are looking for is “I’m open” or “I’m applying everywhere, it’s a numbers game” or my favorite “I just need a job”. While certainly all of those statements are valid, let’s flip the script for a moment.

If you were an employer looking at 100s or 1000s of resumes for positions, do you look for more than 7 seconds (the average time a recruiter initially reviews an applicant) at the resume that is an open book with tons of value that can be decoded to align, or do you look at the resume that is intentional and aligned with your job description? My guess is you are choosing option number two. Who wouldn’t?

While the Easy Apply button can seem like a golden ticket to reach your application volume goal, it rarely translates to success due to high volumes of applicants, missed customization opportunities and a lack of alignment.

So…what do you do? Where do you start if you don’t want to panic apply? Focus on these key things:

  1. Get REAL about what you actually want in your next role: While this can seem obvious, it is truly the hardest tip to nail down. Notice how I did not say, get real about what you want to do the rest of your life? Sometimes applying for jobs can be overwhelming because it seems like you are committing to one path forever. That is hardly the case. Ask yourself what type of role am I aiming for? What experiences do I have that align with that role? Without careful reflection, the temptation to throw your general resume around to see what sticks can overtake a strategic search.

  2. Job titles and Job Descriptions: Once you narrow down what roles you want to target, search for the job title and similar job titles on Linkedin or other job boards. This will allow you to compare job descriptions, as well as titles, to ensure you are applying for roles that are aligned with your goals and experiences. One title at one company, can mean something different at another, so gathering this information can be helpful before searching.

  3. Check your Network and Be Generous: Whether online, or in-person start searching for folks who may have the job title you desire, or work at a company you are excited about. Networking is a two way street so be sure to offer to help anyone you connect with by offering an introduction or warm lead if they are also looking to expand their network. Generosity is never wasted and creates strong bridges moving forward.

Creating a plan and developing alignment for your next role before you NEED one creates a strong foundation to jump into action. There is no easy thing about applying for jobs, but knowing what you want and having a plan for execution is better than a shortcut.
